Dante's inferno escaperoom

 2021 celebrated the 7th centenary of Dante Alighieri’s death in Ravena (Italy). Dante, one of the most outstanding writers of all times, wrote The Divine Comedy, which is considered one of the most important poems of the Middle Ages and the greatest literary work in the Italian language. Dante was known for using the vernacular at a time when Latin was the main language for literature. 

The Divine Comedy is a narrative poem that conveys the pilgrimage to Hell of the poets Virgil and Dante, guided by Beatrice di Portinari (Dante’s impossible love) and Saint Bernard of Clairvaux. All along the journey, Dante has to cross the 9 circles of Inferno, the 9 rings of Mount Purgatory and the 9 celestial bodies of Paradiso. Told in the first person, he finally reaches the heavenly paradise with the help of Beatrice. 

We should understand the message as a reader living in the 14th century, when the capital sins and The Holy Bible were represented in arts all around Europe. Romanesque and Gothic art was reaching the end to give way to the great Renaissance.

For our escape room, students, divided into two groups, have crossed all the circles of Hell and the rings of Purgatory solving different puzzles and enigmas, and finally, both groups, reunited, like Dante and Beatrice, reach the top and see the light. The final task was to open a crytex with a hidden message.

En 2021  se celebró el 7º centenario de la muerte de Dante Alighieri en Rávena (Italia). Dante, uno de los escritores más destacados de todos los tiempos, escribió La Divina Comedia, considerado uno de los poemas más importantes de la Edad Media y la mayor obra literaria en lengua italiana. Dante era conocido por usar la lengua vernácula en un momento en que el latín era el idioma principal de la literatura.

La Divina Comedia es un poema narrativo que cuenta la peregrinación al Infierno de los poetas Virgilio y Dante, guiados por Beatrice di Portinari (el amor imposible de Dante) y San Bernardo de Clairvaux. A lo largo del viaje, Dante tiene que atravesar los 9 círculos del Infierno, los 9 anillos del Monte Purgatorio y los 9 cuerpos celestes del Paraíso. Contada en primera persona, finalmente llega al paraíso celestial con la ayuda de Beatrice.

Debemos entender el mensaje como un lector del siglo XIV, cuando los pecados capitales y la Biblia estaban representados en las artes de toda Europa. El arte Románico y Gótico llegaban a su fin para dar paso al gran Renacimiento.

Para nuestro escape room, los alumnos, divididos en dos grupos, han atravesado todos los círculos del Infierno y los anillos del Purgatorio resolviendo diferentes acertijos y enigmas, y finalmente, ambos grupos, reunidos, como Dante y Beatrice, alcanzan la cima y ven la luz. La tarea final fue abrir un crytex con un mensaje oculto.
